Herbs

Most “flaky” herbs are 3 parts fresh to 1 part dried.

1 Tbsp fresh ≈ 1 tsp dried ≈ ½ tsp ground.

The 3:1 conversion applies to cilantro, dill, marjoram, oregano, rosemary, tarragon, etc.

Exceptions to the 3:1 Conversion

1 clove of garlic ≈ 1 tsp fresh chopped garlic ≈ ½ tsp jarred minced garlic ≈ ½ tsp garlic flakes (dehydrated/dried minced garlic) ≈ ¼ tsp granulated garlic ≈ ⅛ tsp garlic powder ≈ ½ tsp of garlic salt (and subtract ⅜ tsp salt from your recipe).

Onions

  • 1 small (billiard ball-sized) onion ≈ ⅓ cup chopped fresh onion ≈ 1 tsp onion powder ≈ 1 Tbsp dried onion flakes.
  • 1 medium (tennis ball-sized) onion ≈ 1 cup of chopped onion ≈ 1 Tbsp onion powder ≈ 3 Tbsp dried onion flakes.

1 can (14 -16 oz) ≈ 1½ cups cooked beans ≈ ½ c dry beans ≈ 4 oz dry beans.

Canned Beans to Cooked Beans:

  • 14 -16 oz can ≈ 1.5 cups cooked beans.
  • 19 oz can ≈ 2¼ cups cooked beans.
  • 28 oz can ≈ 3 – 3¼ cups cooked beans.

Yields After Cooking:

  • 1 pound dry beans ≈ 2 cups dry beans ≈ 6 to 7 cups cooked beans, drained.
  • 1 cup dry beans (most kinds) ≈ 3 cups cooked beans.
  • ⅔ cup dry beans (most kinds) ≈ 2 cups cooked beans.
  • ½ cup dry beans (most kinds) ≈ 1½ cups cooked beans.
  • ⅓ cup dry beans ≈ 1 cup cooked beans.
